Slashdot recently ran a story about a amazon.com's new quasi-SNS program Amazon Connect. (The link is to an author's home page for amazon connect.)

Here's what amazon says about the idea:

"Amazon Connect is a new program currently open to a select group of authors. This program allows authors to post messages directly to their readers on a wide variety of subjects. Currently, messages will appear on the detail page of an author’s book as well as on her/his profile page. As part of the program, authors may create a profile page with personalized information."

Basically, they're trying to create a social network for authors, complete with a blog, bio, and friends listing. The interface is painful, but they're just starting out. Apparently there are only a dozen or so authors using amazon connect right now.

Does anyone else know of examples of social networking being applied to more conventional websites?

[EDIT: removed my lame request, see comments]

Honestly, I don't like asking. So, I'm hanging my head in shame and all that jazz. And I can sympathize with how lame it is that this community has been overrun by random requests for invites. But the requests seem to work, so what do I do? React to the fact that this seems to be an actual place where people give out invites, or obey the rule that everyone else is successfully breaking?

So, now that I've talked it out and decided that something should change, I guess I might as well do something instead of just being a hypocrite.

I just made a new lj community:

Maybe that will help things out a bit.
